Grief & Loss

Grief and loss, though we all experience it, can be a difficult topic for us to face and discuss. At times this difficulty gives rise to individuals feeling “rushed” through their grief. People can experience the feelings of grief and loss due to a wide variety of circumstances. The most commonly thought of circumstance being the death of a loved one.

Other circumstances that may ignite feelings of grief and loss may be:

  • grief-and-lossloss of a pregnancy
  • divorce
  • death of a pet
  • loss of job
  • loss of health and independence
  • loss of sense of self

There are five stages of grief and loss

  1. Denial and isolation
  2. Anger
  3. Bargaining
  4. Depression
  5. Acceptance

While the stages are listed in a particular order, there is no particular order to which a person is to mourn. We often move between stages, spending different lengths of time working through each step and expressing each stage with different levels of intensity. There is also no time limit in which to grieve.
